Joan Miró
Born in Barcelona, Joan Miró (1893-1983) is one of the most popular artists of the 20th century. His emblematic, colourful paintings move between surreal and abstract art. At first glance, they appear naive and almost childlike. Under the influence of Surrealism, elements of the grotesque alternate with scenes of cheerful humour. Here the artist developed his own pictorial language consisting of lines, colours, signs and symbols. Miró was particularly productive as a graphic artist. He mainly created etchings and lithographs. With large editions, he tried to appeal to a wide audience.
